A yellow bird in a cage, a lime green dress and a soft pink colored vase define the pastel color scheme for this painting. Keeping birds is an old Beijing tradition dating back as early as the Han dynasty (206BC-AD220). During the Tang dynasty (618-907) caged birds became a symbol of wealth and stature as scholars began to collect exotic birds and more were brought into China as tribute payments to the Emperor. Keeping pet birds in China is still a popular custom but the government has banned the purchase and sale of many birds to protect the environment and reduce the threat to certain bird species. Vibrant colors, stylized forms and simple composition are a signature look for this artist. As a contemporary style of Asian art, this watercolor follows traditional forms, yet seems to cross cultures and hemispheres with its rustic sensibilities and basic execution. This is a one-of-a-kind original; size is 11 and 3/8 inches by 11 and 3/8 inches. It is shipped flat without a frame.
